Etymology of Educational Technology.

The word “education” is derived from the Latin educare, which means to “bring up” or “nourish,” or educere, which means to “lead out” or “draw out.” Educare is also related to the English word educe, which means “to bring forth” or “to produce.”

The word “technology” comes from the Greek word “techne,” which means “skill, or craft,” or “tekhnologia” which means “the study of crafts.” This was translated into Latin as “technologia” and then into English as “technology.”

Definition of Educational Technology

Digital technology used to facilitate learning through Instructional Design and Learning Theory.

Use of the Word Technology.

It was first used in the 18th century to refer to the study of natural sciences. Jeremy Bentham defined it as “the study of the arts of life.” It has been used to describe many different things, from the craft of making tools to heavy machinery. Technology is often used as a synonym for computers and other machines. But it can also be used more broadly to refer to any kind of invention or innovation that makes life easier or more efficient.

Educational Technology.

Educational technology uses both physical and digital tools to improve the quality of education. It can be used as a tool to enhance the learning experience or as a way to track student progress.

The use of educational technology has been on the rise in recent years, with more and more schools adopting it. The benefits are not just for students but also for teachers, who can use it to improve their teaching skills and make their jobs easier. Educational technology is a broad term that encompasses a wide range of tools, techniques, and strategies for teaching and learning. The phrase has been used to refer to everything from chalkboards to computers, from textbooks to tablets, from lectures to online courses. The first educational technology was the alphabet invented by Phoenicians and Greeks. The most popular form of educational technology today is eLearning. eLearning refers to online training or education outside of a traditional classroom setting.

Technology & Language Evolves.

Both the definition of the word and what it describes have changed. Technology from 2000 is not the same as in 2020 or 1920. Although the term “technology” existed after the 1700s, there was technology before then. For example:

  • What were the emerging technologies of the 1800s?
  • What bout the 1100s?
  • Was there technology before 3000s BCE?

It is a process of words that change, definitions change, and what they describe changes.

Since language and technology are constantly evolving, so should education. Or as once said,

The most damaging phrase in the language is ‘We’ve always done it this way.’
